I have just finished reading Richard Dawkins memoir ‘An Appetite for Wonder’. Quite a family, what a life and this is only part 1. I got a bit lost when he describes the maths behind his experiments but he also mentions his interpretation of memes which appear to follow on from his ideas regarding the selfish gene. He suggests that there can be something learnt, not necessarily physical, passed on through generations which can bring about some form of repeatable response or action.? Something that can be recognised or understood across an unrelated group.? I think he is talking about something different from instinct. If his mind is following an evolutionary path, it could be that there is a connection here with my quest. I think the image of the Dodo might be described as a confused meme – the model being physical but inaccurate, but acts to support a fixed idea which is passed on because of an anxiety about our own approaching extinction.
Gosh – all a bit deep for me.
